If you’re starting a business, three words tend to land on you all at once: website, email, social media. Everyone says you need all of them, nobody says in what order, and so the whole thing stalls. Here’s the calm version: you don’t do them all at once. You do them in the order that actually moves your business forward.
Start with the one thing you own
Social media feels like the obvious first move because it’s free and everyone’s already there. But you don’t own your social accounts — the platform does. They control who sees your posts, and they can change the rules (or shut you down) overnight. Your website is the one piece of your online presence that belongs to you. It’s your home base. Everything else should point back to it.
So the honest first step is a simple website — even a single, clear page that says who you are, what you do, who it’s for, and how to reach you. It does not need to be fancy. It needs to exist and load fast on a phone.
Second: a way to stay in touch (email)
Once people can find you, you need a way to keep the ones who are interested. That’s an email list. When someone lands on your site and isn’t ready to buy or hire yet, an email signup lets you stay in their world instead of hoping they remember you. Email consistently outperforms social for actually reaching the people who care — because it lands in an inbox, not an algorithm.
Third: social media, as a feeder — not the foundation
Now social makes sense. Its job is to introduce new people to you and send them back to the home base you control. Posting becomes much easier too, because you finally have somewhere to send people and something to invite them into.
The simple order to follow
- Website first — the home you own, even if it’s one page.
- Email list second — so interested people don’t slip away.
- Social media third — to point new people back to both.
If you only do the first one this month, you’re already ahead of most new businesses. Build the foundation you own, then add the rest on top of it — in that order.
