What a Done-For-You Website Should Actually Include (and Red Flags to Avoid)

“Done-for-you” should mean you hand off the stress and get back something that works. But the phrase gets stretched to cover everything from a real, finished website to a half-built template you’re quietly left to figure out yourself. Here’s what a genuinely done-for-you website should include — and the red flags that tell you it’s not.

What ‘done-for-you’ should actually include

  • A finished, working site — not a template you still have to assemble.
  • Mobile-ready and fast — most visitors arrive on a phone.
  • The basics handled — domain, secure connection (HTTPS), and contact details all set up.
  • An email signup connected and tested, so you can keep the people who visit.
  • The foundations of getting found — clear page titles and descriptions so search engines understand you.
  • A plain-English handoff — a short walkthrough so you can run it without a degree in tech.

The part people forget to ask about: ownership

This is the big one. You should own everything — your domain, your website files, your email list, and the accounts they live in. If a provider keeps your domain in their name, or builds your site on a platform you can never export or move, you’re not a client — you’re a hostage. A good done-for-you build leaves you fully capable and free to leave, even if you never do.

Red flags to walk away from

  • They won’t put your domain and accounts in your name.
  • Vague pricing, or a low setup price that hides large unavoidable monthly fees.
  • No clear list of what you actually get — just ‘a website.’
  • You can never reach a real person, and nothing is ever explained.
  • Every small change costs extra and only they can make it.

The simple test

Before you hire anyone, ask one question: “When this is done, do I own everything and can I run it myself if I want to?” If the answer is a clear yes — with a real handoff and no jargon — that’s the kind of done-for-you worth paying for.
